Lord Storey Private Members Bill

A private members bill to bring in home education registers had its Second Reading in the House of Lords on November 15th.

The bill has no chance of becoming law not least because the government has its own legislative proposals in the forthcoming Children’s Wellbeing Bill.

The main point interest at Second Reading therefore was the comment from the Minister with responsibility for education in the Lords, Baroness Smith of Malvern, who said:

“I am not in a position to say exactly when the children’s well-being Bill will be introduced, but we included it in this year’s King’s Speech, and in fact I spoke about it in my maiden speech from this Dispatch Box, so it will be within this parliamentary Session.[SOURCE]

This is a more up to date clue about timing than Bridget Philippson’s indication an interview with the BBC October 2024 which was analysed on HE-BYTE here.

Parliamentary sessions are explained here as usually lasting for a year. The current session began with the Kings Speech in July 2024.
